Discovering Teramo, Campli and Civitella del Tronto

From Rocca Santa Maria, following the SP48, we arrive at Teramo, a city of great historical and cultural beauty. Here we will be able to admire the remains of a beautiful Roman theater, the amphitheater and some thermal baths of Roman villas. The best known is the Domus del Leone, so called because it houses the famous Mosaic of the Lion. The Monica Castle which stands up in its grandeur. There are many churches to visit such as the ancient Church of Sant’Anna dei Pompetti, the unique Cathedral of San Berardo, built in 1158 and the Sanctuary of the Madonna delle Grazie, dating back to the mid-1100s.

Not only history and culture but also excellent cuisine … just enter one of the bars in the historic center to taste the exquisite dishes typical of the sophisticated Teramo cuisine such as timballo, the guitar with pallottine , scrippelle ‘mbusse and mazzarelle .

Just 15 minutes from Teramo we find the charming village of Campli , a municipality that is part of the mountain community of La Laga and which since 2018 has become part of the club “Most beautiful villages in ‘Italy”. Walking through its streets rich in history, one is fascinated by the beautiful churches and architectural monuments that characterize this place. One of the best known and most important monuments of Campli is undoubtedly the Holy Stairs, an element of great artistic and religious value and one of the most interesting places of worship in Abruzzo. Also worth visiting are the beautiful Cathedral of Santa Maria in Platea built at the end of the 15th century, and the Necropolis of Campovalano, where traces of civilizations dating back to the Bronze Age have been found!

From Campli we move to Civitella del Tronto , another wonderful village that is part of the Comunità Montana della Laga and one of the “most beautiful villages in Italy”.
Civitella is known for its magnificent fortress, the last bastion of the Bourbons and one of the largest strongholds in Europe. Inside we will be able to visit all the rooms that once housed the soldiers, the prisons, the basements, the ovens and many other rooms. In the Fortress we also find the Historical Museum of Weapons and Ancient Maps which houses war instruments and artifacts of great historical importance. After the visit to the Fortress it is worth taking a walk through the streets of Civitella where we find the “ruetta”, which is the narrowest street in Italy, the Fontana degli Amanti dating back to 1863 and the Church of Santa Maria degli Angeli which inside it houses a wonderful wooden statue of the Dead Christ.
