A typical activity of wooded areas such as those of Rocca Santa Maria was that of the Carbonari , who, with their few tools and their workers, produced coal.
The Carbonari lived of this productive activity that started in late autumn, when trees began to be cut, and ended in spring, when, after the woodworking process, they brought the coal back to their homes and districts.
Once back in house filled the sacks with coal, laid them on the backs of the mules and took them to the markets for sale.

A typical occupation, still practiced today in some villages in the area, is that of the ‘craftsman, real masters who perform the most disparate tasks such as tailors, blacksmiths, carpenters and manufacturers of wagons and trays , typical means used for towed transport animal.
